MV Kline: Instinctual Trauma Response Certified Trauma Specialist
Trauma can be difficult to verbally process at any developmental stage. For children, it is especially challenging due to developing language, emotional, and communication skills.
Instinctual Trauma Response Therapy (ITR) is a brain-based trauma processing approach developed by psychiatrist Dr. Louis Tinnin and art therapist Dr. Linda Gantt. ITR combines art, narrative, and body-based techniques to help children (and adults) understand and process the effects of trauma.
A central component of ITR is the Graphic Narrative, an art-based process that works with the brain's systems to help children organize fragmented memories, sensations, and emotions into a coherent story. This communicates to the brain and nervous system that the traumatic event is in the past and is no longer a present danger. Children can use art, play, and other creative activities to tell their story. This process can even be adapted for children and adults who have experienced trauma before they had the language to describe it.
